Anger Disorder

 Anger Disorder

An anger disorder is a condition in which you experience anger and rage that's far beyond normal levels. Several different disorders may include anger symptoms, including oppositional defiant disorder, paranoid disorder, and antisocial disorder. The most common diagnosis for patients who struggle with anger is intermittent explosive disorder (IED).

The symptoms of IED include:

• Sudden angry outbursts

• Extreme frustration levels

• Racing thoughts

• Feelings of rage

• Feelings of being out of control

• Depression

• Irritability

• Concentration problems

If you suffer from IED or another anger disorder, you may feel particularly energized during angry outbursts, and then exhausted and depressed afterward. Many individuals who suffer from IED or other anger disorders struggle to manage their anger because they understand that their behavior isn't healthy.

Treatment for IED or other anger disorders takes a multifaceted approach. Possible treatments include:

Medication

Medication can help individuals who struggle with anger disorders. With the right medication, you can control your anger level much more easily and you'll have less frequent angry outbursts. Medication options include antidepressants, anticonvulsants, antianxiety drugs, and mood-stabilizing medications, depending on your needs.

Therapy

Therapy includes a variety of approaches depending on your needs. Many patients find talk therapy is helpful for uncovering the reasons for triggers and finding positive ways to make necessary changes.

Skills training

Your provider and/or therapist can help you learn ways to control your anger impulses in a healthy way. You will learn techniques and tools to diffuse anger and prevent angry rages. Your skills training may include relaxation, meditation, or other exercises.

Most patients who suffer from anger disorders find that a combination approach to anger management is extremely effective. If your anger is out of control, don’t let it destroy your relationships and your life.
